RTA, Industry Partners Coordinating Strategy to Support Hardwood Supply
RTA joins industry partners to address long-term hardwood and crosstie supply challenges

RTA is working alongside industry organizations such as the National Hardwood Lumber Association through the Protecting the Future of American Hardwood initiative to coordinate a strategic effort aimed at supporting domestic hardwood production and ensuring a stable supply of wood ties moving forward.
To ensure the wood tie industry's voice is clearly represented as solutions are developed, RTA is helping shape the strategic roadmap for legislative, regulatory, and executive action. Simultaneously, RTA is helping develop industry messaging, leverage communication channels to raise awareness, and engage directly with policymakers and railroads.
A recent Hardwood Market Report (HMR Executive, July 2026) highlights growing concerns around the long-term stability of the hardwood crosstie supply chain. Declines in domestic hardwood production, driven by reduced demand in other markets, increased competition from substitutes, and continued sawmill closures, are impacting the industry’s capacity to produce ties.
While current wood tie inventories are steady, production slowdowns and the time required to properly dry ties may be masking future supply constraints. With fewer mills in operation, long-term availability could tighten if current trends continue.
RTA will continue to work with industry partners on this effort and keep members updated as the strategy progresses, and more information will be provided in the upcoming edition of Crossties magazine.
